In the third chapter, Pinker addresses the familiar problem of academese, legalese, professionalese…all the eses that make one want to throw a book, paper, or article in the trash rather than finish it. Infused with humor and informed by his deep understanding of linguistics, Pinker’s book dives into why our writing can be lackluster and offers actionable advice to improve its clarity and impact. Pinker is known for his fascinating insights on language and the human mind and penned a modern-day Strunk & White with his book, The Sense of Style. Allow time between writing and editing, so you can approach your own work with fresh eyes. Have someone from the intended audience read your work and provide feedback.Assume that readers know less about the topic than you do, but are still intelligent and sophisticated.Use concrete nouns and refer to tangible things instead of abstractions. To improve writing, Cognitive psychologist Steven Pinker suggests several strategies: When we know a lot about a topic, it can be difficult to write about it in a way that makes sense to the layperson.

There will be no advertising since I'm not interested in making money, just sharing. All discussions will be related to books and reading. Here I will post reviews of books I have just finished reading and news items and articles of interest. At the urging of a number of friends, I decided to start a blog. I’ve been a book reviewer for a number of years and have posted hundreds of reviews on both Goodreads and LibraryThing. My focus is contemporary literary fiction (especially Canadian fiction) and mysteries. Schatje’s Shelves is my reading blog devoted primarily to reviews of the books I acquire for my library - a library which has 8,050+ books (print, ebooks, audiobooks) and keeps growing. Now that I'm retired, I have so much more time to read (and to enjoy the library my husband made for me). For 30 years, I was a high school English teacher/teacher-librarian. Nevertheless, I think I had some legitimate issues with the novel, too. I began another book I enjoyed more, and I never seemed to quite get a good stretch of time to read this one. As a caveat, I admit that my reading of the novel was quite distracted. It failed to draw me in as fiction, even though its background of civil war in Sri Lanka is important and of interest, in itself. But I found myself becoming impatient with it. Unfortunately, Karunatilaka’s winning novel, The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida, is one of only a few Booker prize winners I didn’t really enjoy, despite the overwhelming praise it has received: despite the fact that looking at it objectively, it is a good book. Shehan Karunatilaka is the second Sri Lankan to win the Booker prize (Michael Ondaatje won it in 1993 for The English Patient). Who cares if people say she's a workaholic and an icy bitch? She didn't get to the top by being prone to whims and experiments. She's VP at a large tech company, and she's damn good at it. The uptight and annoyingly attractive Piper is blocking her every move.įor Piper Bradshaw, Vineyard is not her job. But getting the boss's daughter on board is harder than expected. Lindsay has tons of ideas that she's been dying to put into action, and this is her big chance to increase the success of the business and prove she's more than ready to run things solo. She's thrilled when her boss leaves her in charge (well, half charge) and tells her to feel free to make changes. When the widowed owner of the wine bar Vineyard decides she wants to take some time off and travel abroad, she leaves her business in the very capable hands of the two women she trusts most: her daughter Piper and Vineyard's general manager, Lindsay.įor Lindsay Kent, Vineyard is her dream job. |
